System Analysis of the Birth Notification Platform in South Sudan
Project Description
CSF in collaboration with the Child Protection Section of UNICEF South Sudan, conducted a comprehensive system analysis of the national birth notification system to support its potential integration with the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) framework.
The birth notification system, implemented in several health facilities, had been non-operational since 2018—creating gaps in the timely and accurate reporting of vital events. To address these challenges, CSF conducted an in-depth stakeholder mapping and interviewed key actors, including health facility users, Ministry of Health officials, and UNICEF’s IT department, to identify technical and operational bottlenecks.
The resulting analysis provided evidence-based recommendations for strengthening the system’s functionality, interoperability, and data flow, ensuring greater resilience and sustainability. The findings also outlined a roadmap for linking the birth notification system with the national CRVS system to support comprehensive registration of births, deaths, and other vital events.
This initiative aligns with the Government of South Sudan’s broader goal to establish a data-driven and integrated CRVS platform, improving the country’s capacity for planning, governance, and service delivery.
