Strengthening TVET Data Systems for Skills Development in Malawi
Project Description
To strengthen its technical and vocational education sector, the Government of Malawi—with support from UNESCO through the Better Education for Africa’s Rights (BEAR) initiative—is implementing a Technical and Vocational Education and Training Management Information System (TVETMIS) in partnership with CSF.
The initiative aims to improve the quality, coverage, and coordination of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) nationwide. CSF is adapting and configuring OpenEMIS to serve the specific data needs of the TVET sector, including customized structures by Level, Cycle, Programme, and Field of Study.
The system captures detailed data on institutions, ownership, sectors, providers, programmes, students, teachers, and certifications—supporting timely and reliable reporting for strategic planning under Malawi’s Education Sector Strategic Plan and Vision 2020.
By deploying an open-source and scalable platform, Malawi’s TVETMIS will enhance decision-making, promote accountability, and enable more effective alignment between education outcomes and labour-market needs.
